WICK WIVES: The evening of May 22 was typical for this year, being cold and damp. This did not stop 21 members and friends attending a bring-and-buy event, held at the home of Marjorie Cox. There were the usual stalls for this kind of occasion - cakes, preserves, plants, gifts and bric-a-brac and refreshments were prepared and served by Marjorie and members of the committee.A commendable sum of £159 was raised and this was sent to the current chairman's charity - the Vale of Evesham Cancer Relief Fund.WICK WALKERS: The May walk was around Shrawley on the banks of the River Severn. Alex and Clive Brown led a group of 11 members and one guest - a dog. They started from the Shrawley Picnic Place and enjoyed four miles of undulating country, along footpaths and tracks across farmland.Helping Hands   more...

VILLAGE NEWS: Harvington

ARCH BENEFICE: The village hall was the venue for a celebratory gathering of people from the four churches - Abbots Morton, Church Lench, Rous Lench and Harvington. A party to mark its fifth birthday also celebrated the Rector's 50th, though this, as he obligingly pointed out, was only an official birthday, the actual date of which was in February. Supper had been provided by contributors including all the Rector's family. This was followed by a programme of songs and music and a short speech from the Rector in which he reflected on his time in the area. The first part of it recovering from a heart attack which afflicted him on the day he and his family were scheduled to move into the rectory. Following the communion service on Sunday morning the notices included a strong plea for more people to report to the church on Saturday at 10am to help with the clearing and tidying of the churchyard and cemetery and for church members to spread the word about the show marquee for the church fete to be held on June 24. VILLAGE NEWS: Ilmington

PARISH COUNCIL: At the annual meeting of the parish council, Cllr Tony Wilkins was re-elected chairman. The meeting then discussed the recent housing survey carried out by Warwickshire Rural Community Council. Charles Barlow, the rural housing enabler, said that the survey went well and there were no surprises. All the 19 households who, according to the survey, had housing needs also had connections with the parish. Mr Barlow said that he needed to research further those who expressed a preference for local market housing, and that would take about a week.Mr Barlow wanted the parish council to express a commitment to the scheme and the next thing to do would be to set up a working party, consisting of about two parish councillors, and the county and district councillors, to find out which pieces of land were available and who owned them. Mr Barlow could then approach the landowners. The chairman reported that due to the heavy rain, sewage had been flowing down the Armscote Road for 250 yards, and what did not go into the ditch ended up in Mr Betteridge's field. Mr Jack Hands had written to John Maples MP about this. A letter had been received from Paul Bryan about parking in Back Street in front of Berry View and Lavender Cottage, and the state of the grass verge in that area. Stones had been placed on the road outside Berry View to stop cars from being parked there. The clerk reported that the response to the request for volunteers to work on various requirements in the action plan had been disappointing. There had been three volunteers, two for setting up a working group to tackle parking issues, and one for compiling an information pack about the village, and a leaflet about parish walks.   more...

Ring 750855 before the end of June.PARISH COUNCIL: At the annual parish council meeting, following the open forum, Cilla Cameron and Arthur Ore were re-elected to serve as chairman and vice-chairman for the coming year.Highways: Approval from Highways has now been granted for planters to be sited in Pershore Road and Tewkesbury Road, beneath the village nameplates. It is hoped that the addition of the planters will make drivers aware that they are entering a gateway to the village and so slow their speed. Sponsors for the planters are being sought. Following comments raised at the annual parish meeting in April, Highways have been out to inspect the storm water drains in New Road. A 500-metre stretch of drain have now been jetted, and some maintenance issues have been identified. Highways have assured the council that an order or the remedial works has now been placed. The question of having the verge in New Road reinstated has been raised. However, this would only be viable if people refrained from parking on the verge. Parking continues to be an issue around the village.Gipsy site of B4080: The site has been partially cleared and the roadside perimeter fence has been secured. There is still some concern that the site has not been cleared effectively, and that the district council has not pursued compulsory purchase of the land. This matter will be taken up with the district council.Affordable Housing, Pershore Road: Wychavon District Council has confirmed that Rooftop Housing Association has secured funding for the site from the Housing Corporation, the parish council will continue to pressurise the district council into moving forward with this site.Parish Plan: The council reviewed progress against all of the points raised in the action plan. An update on the plan will be included in the parish magazine over the next few months. Proposed merger of police forces: The council has agreed to support both Wychavon District Council and West Mercia police, in their lobbying against the merger, and will be sending supporting letters to the Home Office. The next parish council meeting will be on Tuesday, June 13 in the Memorial Village Hall. The council welcomes members of the public to attend the open which begins at 7.30pm.   more...

VILLAGE NEWS: Badsey

BADSEY SOCIETY: Maureen Spinks, co-ordinator of the Badsey Enclosure Map project, has announced that the framed copy of the 200-year-old village map now had a permanent home in St James' Church. Society members, Richard Phillips, Will Dallimore and John Dallimore, under the supervision of churchwarden Chris Smith, fixed the large map to the south wall of the church, together with a descriptive plaque. The society's two-year project has enabled villagers to discover the development of Badsey and Aldington since the parish was enclosed at the turn of the 19th century. Eckington   more...

BIDFORD: Fears ease on station closing

THE future of Bidford fire station appeared to be more secure this week after fears that it faced imminent closure as part of a cost-cutting exercise. The alarm was raised several weeks ago when it was revealed that the fire service had been instructed to trim its budget by £500,000 for the next three years.Within days, it was feared that this year's targets would be met by the closure of Bidford and Studley stations swept through the area. Local residents in Bidford staged a spontaneous demonstration outside the Bramley Way building. But after a statement by Warwickshire's chief fire officer William Brown in relation to Studley fire station, fears began to ease.He said: "Studley fire station is strategically important to us and there are no plans to close or move it."Bidford parish clerk Elisabeth Uggerloese who received a letter from Warwickshire's cabinet member Richard Hobbs told the Journal: "We have received a reply from the fire service that indicates that the closure of Bidford station has not been discussed at any meeting." Parish councillors will discuss Mr Hobb's reply at a meeting on Monday, June 26 at 7.30pm at Bidford Primary School. Mr Brown had previously said: "As a consequence of decisions made within the budget set, it's necessary for Warwickshire fire and rescue service to review the level of resources provided throughout the county. "In order to do this the service is under taking a review or risk with the county. The outcome of which will be in a report to Warwickshire County Council members setting out the possible options of change." Mr Brown was unable to confirm this week when a meeting would take place to discuss details of how the savings could be achieved.County and District councillor Peter Barnes who campaigned to maintain the fire service in the village said: "If our pressure on the portfolio holder worked then this is wonderful news - good news so far."   more...

BROADWAY: Scheme for road postsis rejected

PLANS to install posts at the side of the High Street in Broadway to protect the footpath from heavy vehicles have been given the thumbs down by local residents and parish councillors. But further talks are expected to be held before any formal view is submitted to the county council as the highway authority. The subject had been considered for a while because of continuing problems with drivers mounting the kerb and driving onto the public footway. In response, the county council has offered to install the posts as resurfacing work is carried out. However, a number of parish councillors voted against the proposal and called for further negotiations with the county.Cllr Bob Banks said: "What is really needed is stricter policy and better enforcement of the parking laws so that the character of our beautiful High Street can be preserved without being littered with too many posts." "The county council will replace the broken and cracked slabs, which have been damaged because of the cars, but we don't want them to replace the slabs with tarmac. Neither do we want posts, as it will destroy the ambience of our village. "The problem of cracked slabs is down to drivers who park on the footpath what we really need parking wardens to fine them," he added.Worcestershire County councillor for Broadway Liz Eyre, who voted in favour of the posts, said: "I attended an extraordinary meeting of Broadway Parish Council on the May 31. "The item under consideration was whether when the gavels and slabs in two locations in Broadway are upgraded - an expenditure I have long campaigned and petitioned for - posts should be included in the scheme for pedestrian safety reasons."Chairman of the Broadway parish council David Folkes said: "Further discussions with the residents and traders will, we hope, take place."   more...

A NEW group has been set up in the Vale with the aim of saving the amount of unwanted articles finishing up in landfill sites.Sarah Cohen, of Lower Moor, was introduced to Freecycle through a group based on Malvern. "I though it was such a great scheme that we needed one here," she explained, "and so the Evesham and Pershore group was set up."She said Freecycle was a way to re-use within the community, even better than recycling and re-use was the least polluting way of dealing with waste as well as being the most fun.Mrs Cohen said: "Evesham and Pershore has had its own group since February and now has nearly 400 members. People can just join our local group via the internet on www.freecycle.org and then the idea is simple."People who have got goods to get rid of post an offer message and those who want them reply and collect. Alternatively, if you want something you feel someone might have you just post a wanted message and see what happens. "No money changes hands, your rubbish is removed, landfill is not filled and you often get to meet nice people."Mrs Cohen said Wychavon District Council was supportive by helping to distribute leaflets. James Dyer, the group contact at the council, said it was a good scheme because it helped reduce bulky waste collections. Similarly, the scheme was enthusiastically backed by Worcestershire County Council which was producing and printing posters, beer mats and leaflets."Of course, they get help to meet recycling targets for little input, but that's good too," Mrs Cohen said. "We are the envy of almost all the other groups for our council support."Freecycle started three years ago in America and is now a global network with two million members worldwide. Britain has 145,000 members in 250 groups. One member of the Evesham and Pershore group obtained a complete set of camping equipment from Freecycle, her first tent just two minutes after she posted a wanted for it. Another member from Ashton-under-Hill is offering a redundant hand-built go-cart.Mrs Cohen said another odd fact was that in the last year the Freecycle movement worldwide saved enough from landfill which if put into refuse trucks and stacked on top of one another they would be three times the height of Mount Everest.   more...

COUNTRY NEWS: No let-up on badger cull despite fall in TB

CLAIMS that proposals for a cull of diseased badgers should be abandoned because of a fall in the number of cattle diagnosed with bovine TB in the early part of this year have been labelled irresponsible. The Country Land and Business Association said the slight fall in cases could be attributable to a number of factors and ministers should not loose sight of the fact that there were still some 3,300 herds under restriction and almost a thousand new cases reported in the first three months of the year."TB is an extremely serious disease which is difficult to control both in animals and in humans and it is wholly irresponsible to suggest that a slight fall in the number of cases in cattle should divert us from taking the measures which are necessary to control and eventually eradicate TB," said Sarah Slade, the CLA's TB advisor.   more...
