Past

From the archives - February 1, 2007

100 Years Ago February 2, 1907 Some adventurous spirits ventured on the ice on the Avon at Evesham on Saturday afternoon, but it was far from safe and they were fortunate in not meeting with any mishap. The Borough Surveyor had very thoughtfully arranged for a number of ropes and ladders to be placed at convenient places on the banks of the river in readiness for any accident, but these were not required. It is satisfactory to note that Mr Mawson is fully alive to the dangers which attends skating on the river, and no doubt he will carry out similar precautions should the frost be sufficiently severe to warrant skating on the river. It will be remembered that the last time we had any prolonged period of skating on the Avon was in 1895, and that the frost then did not commence till the end of January.  more...
