Letters

Theatre programme has a limited appeal

SIR - Mr Phillpott's article about the Swan Theatre (Saturday, January 19) reflected a singularly biased view of the "defining moment" five years ago when the city council decided to discontinue most of its funding of the theatre, despite the Arts Council's decision to increase its own substantial support.  more...

There’s something for all at the Swan

SIR - At 70 years old, I don't get out at all in the evenings, but I am delighted for my fellow citizens that Chris Jaeger puts on a variety of shows at the Swan Theatre, from "bums-on-seats" populist shows to acts that cater for more specialist tastes.  more...

Praise for Welsh Water

MAY I, through the courtesy of your columns, place on record my appreciation of the efforts made by Welsh Water to minimise the inconvenience caused by the current road works.  more...

What is happening to Ledbury?

I AM not normally sufficiently moved to write letters to the Ledbury Reporter but I feel very strongly about the current downward slide of Ledbury. The work being carried out by Welsh Water and the impact on local businesses for a protracted period is bad enough, but the unsightliness of the streets at the moment must surely be compounding matters. There seems to be an unprecedented amount of litter everywhere, a huge amount of weeds sprouting up in the pavements and the whole town just looks tired and dirty. The two piles of vomit outside the former Cottage Hospital have been there since New Year's Day. I telephoned Herefordshire Council to bring this to their attention and complain about the general condition of the streets but despite their assurance that they would get someone out to clear it up, a week later nothing has been done about it.  more...

20mph speed limit

REFERENCE the letter of January 25 from Julian Brown, suggesting that more areas should have a 20mph speed limit imposed. Many people would enthusiastically support this idea, especially in our rural villages with narrow roads, and in residential areas with children and/or elderly residents. However the police refuse to monitor speeds in 30mph zones, unless there is a history of speed related accident and injury in these areas. As many motorists consistently ignore these 30 mph limits, what chance is there of achieving a reduction to 20mph.?  more...

Damage to car

LAST year the police were appealing for the owner of a vehicle with a damaged wing mirror to come forward so that the culprit, now remorseful, could make amends. Perhaps the person who damaged the passenger side wing mirror of my Vauxhall Astra in Geraldine Road on the night of Saturday/Sunday, January 26/27, might like to do the same. Considerable force was used; this was no unfortunate accident.  more...

In praise of wheelie bins

I APPLAUD the front page of the Malvern Gazette this morning (January 25).  more...

Recycling problems

ON the subject of rubbish collection and re-cycling, I live about 200 yards inside the boundary of the north-east corner of Herefordshire and am therefore dependant on the Herefordshire Council for this. I have just received from them their newsletter Herefordshire Matters which includes a section entitled Mission Impossible on the subject of household waste. This goes on at great length about ways of reducing the waste of food etc., and while I realise this may be of educational benefit for the modern generation, as far as I am concerned personally, it smacks of teaching your grand-mother to suck eggs! This is because like most of my age group who were brought up during the war years and rationing, I rarely waste food and have a good store of recipes for using left-overs. Also I have owned a compost bin for years into which I place all my kitchen and garden waste.  more...

It’s a real poser for pedestrians

Prevented from using footpath

I AM writing to air my concern and annoyance that all the local children from Woodrush Community High School and Coppice Primary School have been stopped from walking home across the school field to the nearby Bovis estate, This has happened since a new head teacher teacher took over at Coppice Primary School.  more...

Local Walks

Monkwood Nature Reserve, near Sinton Green

Monkwood Nature Reserve is jointly owned by Worcestershire Wildlife Trust and Butterfly Conservation and is freely accessible to the public, with a good network of paths. Don't be dismayed if you come across evidence of tree-felling - it's just that some paths and rides are being widened this winter to improve the habitat for butterflies, especially the scarce wood white.  more...

He's even been given a nickname - Foxy' - and there can be no surer sign of affection than that.  more...
