So sorry for those fined for rubbish

SIR - My heart goes out to the tenants in a block of flats who were fined £100 for putting their rubbish out in bags. It's quite obvious the bins provided were not adequate for their needs. They obviously need bigger bins. Is this another way for the council to generate more money to pay staff on the council silly money.  more...

What of the fate of Salmon’s Leap?

SIR - It was interesting to read that the city's planning committee has agreed to allow a 150-year-old building that has been empty for 20 years to become a restaurant and wine bar.  more...

Merger will make us laughing stock of UK

SIR - So Worcester City Council and Malvern Hills District Council are putting plans together to merge. It just about sums up the two half-baked organisations to consider such thing.  more...

Joining of councils is very good news

SIR - Your headline stating that merger talks were in progress between the two councils is very good news. I realise that there may be staff reductions but if these are handled sensitively they can be dealt with effectively over time and through normal attrition.  more...

If MPs are honest there's no worry

SIR - Worcester News, May 8, MPs fight to halt expenses revelations'. If the MPs have been honest with their expenses claims, surely there is nothing for them to worry about.  more...

Stop referring to them as heathen

SIR - Years ago while serving overseas I had the misfortune to be caught up in a raging fire in which I sustained severe burns. Worse, I lost every possession with the exception of the tattered shorts I was wearing at the time.  more...

Good for straight guy Ed Miliband

Sir - I cannot keep it to myself. I've discovered a straight government minister!  more...

Perhaps it’s time to take the advice

SIR - I thought I'd better answer P Hine's letter Get a life and you won't notice the planes (Letters, May 12) which asks, "What is a chartered psychologist?": It's supposed to be to do with people's well-being, but I'm retired now so perhaps it's time to take his or her advice to get a life and do something useful.  more...

Yes, we’ll be worse

SIR - I agree with Mark Starr that we shall all be worse off, (my weekly shopping has increased in price substantially) but I do not blame New Labour for this rise - I blame the world economic turmoil.  more...

Nobody is paying attention to what people really want

SIR - Your articles New hospital may be too small and it's still on the drawing board', and MP: We don't want more houses here' highlight the undemocratic nature of such decisions. Britain is now governed by a series of unaccountable quangos and bureaucracies, who pay little attention to our opinions. Most of our laws are made in Brussels by people we didn't elect and can't remove. We don't have democracy anymore, just focus groups or spurious consultations, which are then ignored.  more...

Families will face further hardship

SIR - The Chancellor's decision to quietly ditch the exemption on vehicle excise duty increases for larger cars over seven years old will push many hard pressed families into further hardship, but do very little to protect the environment.  more...

Flood cash adds insult to injury

SIR - Last year, following the floods which caused havoc throughout the country, it was announced by the EU Parliament that they had agreed £110 million in aid would be made available to those areas of the country which had been badly hit.  more...

Time to put thug out of circulation

SIR - It was interesting in the News to see a thug complaining that the police kept picking on him. The judge then pointed out that at 22 he had been convicted of 72 offences of drunkeness and violence - extreme in one case - therefore the police should be interested in him. Then he was fined a couple of hundred pounds. I would hazard a guess that he doesn't work - so?  more...

Just what did their sacrifice achieve?

SIR - We are informed that British prisons are now full, with inmates being transferred to open detention centres or released early to make cell space for newcomers.  more...

Another example of EU interference

SIR - If anybody was still in any doubt about the mindless, intransigent interference of the EU into all aspects of British life perhaps the European Council Regulation EEC No. 3922/91 Annex III (EU-OPS) would provide a degree of enlightenment.  more...

Teachers must do a whole lot more

Sir - Through his understatement, describing teaching as "quite hard and frustrating" Mr Shearon sadly illustrates his (and many others) ignorance of the job's demands.  more...

Past

From the Archives - May 15, 2008

100 Years Ago May 16, 1908 WE have on several occasions drawn attention to the inconvenience to which some members of Evesham Town Council are put owing to the hour at which meetings are held. It is extremely awkward for busy businessmen to attend council meetings at 11 o'clock in the morning and when the council meetings is to be followed by an important committee meeting the inconvenience is increased. The town needs good businessmen on the council and if it is to have them the meetings must be fixed at an hour when businessmen can attend without neglecting their own affairs. The members of the council have the remedy in their own hands; they can fix the hours of meetings to suit themselves and we would appeal to those members to whom the hour is immaterial to do what they can to meet the wishes of the busier members.  more...
